IMPLIED IDEA
Now it starts to get tricky. Both of the previous two item-types were fairly ǣ ϐ Ǥ Ǥ ǡ ϐ what can be logically inferred from details in the passage. Let’s say a passage states that a certain organism (X) is only found in the presence of another organism (Y). An Implied Idea item might ask: “If or- ganism Y isn’t present, what can be inferred?” Since the passage explicitly states that X is to be found only in the presence of Y, we can infer that the correct answer is “X is not present.” Some examples of Implied Idea question stems are: • The passage implies that: • The author uses the phrase “ . . . ” to mean: • It can be inferred from the passage that: • Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? Unlike Explicit Detail items, the answer to an Implied Idea item will NOT be explicitly stated. Instead, it will be strongly suggested or implied by the passage and will be consistent with all of the other details of the passage, but you will have to use your critical thinking skills to logically answer the question. 5. In lines 66–80, the author of Passage B implies that: Ǥ ϐ for producing questionable research. Ǥ ϐ the quality of research it chooses to publish. Ǥ ϐ ϐ Ǥ D. conservative researchers are more likely to be published in ϐ position. If Implied Idea items were tricky, Application items go one step further. Instead of simply inferring ideas from details in the passage, now you have to take what you’ve learned from the passage and apply it to a new situation. For example, a passage might ask you: • With which of the following statements would the author most likely agree? • The author would probably consider which of the following a good example of his or her theory? • The passage is most likely taken from which of the following sources?
Example:
APPLICATION
POWER TIP Application items really test your comprehension of the main idea of the passage or a particular part of the passage. It’s a good idea to reread the section in question, quickly, to enhance/refresh your understanding and then try to answer the question.
