PASSAGE I Alkanes are open-chain organic compounds that have the general chemical formula C n H 2 n +2 . For example, propane has the following structural formula: CH 3 — CH 2 — CH 3 For propane, n = 3 (the number of carbon atoms), and 2(3) + 2 = 8 (the number of hydrogen atoms). The series of linked carbon atoms is called the carbon backbone of the compound, and the number of carbon atoms in the backbone gives the compounds their different names. Alkanes that differ by one carbon atom differ in molecular mass by 14u (one carbon atom of mass 12u and two hydrogen atoms of mass 1u each).
