PRACTICE TEST 18B

SECTION 4: SCIENCE TEST 35 Minutes—40 Items

DIRECTIONS: Each passage below is followed by several items. After reading a passage, choose the best answer for each item. Fill in the corresponding oval on your bubble sheet. You may refer to the passage as often as necessary. You are NOT permitted the use of a calculator on this test. Answers are on page 313.

PASSAGE I Alkanes are open-chain organic compounds that have the general chemical formula C n H 2 n +2 . For example, propane has the following structural formula: CH 3 — CH 2 — CH 3 For propane, n = 3 (the number of carbon atoms), and 2(3) + 2 = 8 (the number of hydrogen atoms). The series of linked carbon atoms is called the carbon backbone of the compound, and the number of carbon atoms in the backbone gives the compounds their different names. Alkanes that differ by one carbon atom differ in molecular mass by 14u (one carbon atom of mass 12u and two hydrogen atoms of mass 1u each).
