POWER PRACTICE 4 DIRECTIONS: The following questions refer to sections of the passage below, or to the passage as a whole. Answers are on p. 308. [1] [1] On my vacation to Alaska, I took a trip to Porcupine. In 1905, Porcupine was a thriving town ʹǡͲͲͲ ǡ ǡ ϐ Ǥ ȏʹȐ Hardly any of the town remains today, but there is still gold there, and our guide showed us how to pan for gold. [3] It’s easy to learn how, and anyone can do it. [2] [4] The technique of panning depends on the weight of gold. [5] It’s about 20 times heavier than water, so the gold stays at the bottom of a stream Ǧϐ around bends and along the edge of the stream. [6] It can also get stuck in small crevices of rock and even wedged into pieces of wood. [3] ȏȐ ϐ Ǥ ǯ no sense in panning for gold in a stream where there isn’t any, so go to a stream where people have found gold before. [8] Then concentrate on those areas that are most likely to trap the little bits of gold. [4] [9] To start panning, put a few handfuls of material into your gold pan. [10] Then submerge the pan in the water of the stream. [11] Hold the pan under the surface and move it in a circular motion so that the lighter material sloshes over the edge. [12]
