Debrief Except for a few idiomatic expressions (“It” is getting late, “It” will be sunny today), every pronoun must have an antecedent. An antecedent must be a noun, not a thought or phrase. Identify a pronoun’s antecedent and then check that it is correct by substituting it for the pronoun in the sentence. Use POE Trust your ear. One of the best ways to determine whether an ACT English item needs revising is to see if you understand it. Are you able to comprehend exactly what the sentence is saying and what it is referring to at different points? If not, what parts are ambiguous? Debrief Watch for shifting subject errors. These errors occur if different forms of the same pronoun are used to refer to the antecedent.
