LESSON 5 General Strategies
The items in this section accompany the in-class review of the general strategies tested by the ACT English Test. You will work through the items with your instructor in class. Answers are on page 429. DIRECTIONS: Items #1–10 are based on the passage below. In the passage, certain parts of the sentences have been underlined and numbered. In the right-hand column, you will ϐ Ǣ the “NO CHANGE” option. For each item, select the choice that best expresses the intended idea, is most acceptable in standard written English, or is most consistent with the overall tone and style of the passage. There are also items that ask about a section of the passage or the passage as a whole. Ǣ preceded by statements that are enclosed in boxes. Read the passage through once before you begin to answer the accompanying items. Finding the answers to certain items may depend on looking at material that appears several sentences beyond the item. So, be sure that you have read far enough ahead before you select your answer choice.
The Cambridge Edge Basic Method for Solving English Items 1. Read the passage, stopping at each underlined word or phrase. 2. Decide what, if anything, is wrong with each underlined portion. 3. Without looking at the answer choices, imagine appropriate corrections. 4. Look for the correction among the answer choices. 5. Plug the selected answer choice back into the passage. 6. If you are unable to determine the correct answer, eliminate any obviously wrong choices and make an educated guess.
