VOCABULARY
Vocabulary items test your understanding of a word or phrase in context. The wording of Vocabulary items is usually pretty easy to identify; an item will ask you something like: • The word ------ in line ## means: • ͓͓ǡ ϐ ǦǦǦǦǦǦǫ • In context, the word ------ in line ## means: There are two keys to answering Vocabulary items correctly. First, the correct answer will make perfect sense if it’s substituted for the word for ǯ ϐ Ǥ ǡ Reading Game Plan, you should be familiar with less commonly known meanings of certain words. For example, consider the word “politic.” If you see this word on the test, you might assume the correct answer has something to do with government or politics. However, “politic” can also mean “prudent” (“Although I did not want to attend my friend’s party, it was the politic thing to do”). You have to use context clues in order to ϐ Ǥ 8. Voice items ask about the author’s attitude toward a particular detail or about the overall tone of the passage. Some examples include: • The tone of the passage can best be described as: • The author regards . . . as: • Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude toward . . . ?
REVIEW Remember the advice in Chapter 7 about looking out for faulty synonyms. Just because you recognize the word in question, don’t assume the most common meaning of that word is the correct answer. The correct answer must be correct in context, and the test writers will include common ϐ up if you’re not careful.
