ANATOMY OF THE SCIENCE TEST INSIDE THE DIRECTIONS
The directions below are similar to what appears in the Science Test. There are no surprises here, and on test day, don’t waste any time reading them. SCIENCE DIRECTIONS Each passage below is followed by several items. After reading a passage, choose the best answer to each item. You may refer to the passages as often as necessary. You are NOT permitted the use of a calculator. As you learned in the last section, there are three types of science ǣ ǡ ǡ ϐ Viewpoints. Some passages include only an introductory sentence and a ϐǤ ϐǤ ǡ ϐ ǡ ǡ complexity of the data presented. Ǥ Ǥ ϐ ǡ ϐ notes, until you understand the topic and could probably write a research paper about it. The second approach is to panic and stare blankly at your test booklet. The third approach is to calmly preview the passage without trying to memorize any details, gaining a general understanding of the data collection, experiment, or model presented. Which approach is best? Remember, this test measures science reasoning, not science knowledge, so the third approach will get you closest to your goal within the 35-minute time limit. Let’s try a sample passage using this third approach. As you read, underline or star any information about why or how the experiment was conducted. Gloss over words you don’t recognize. Remember, you can come back to the passage when you’re ready to answer questions.
